Geriatric Pet Care from Our San Jose Veterinarian
At Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital, our San Jose veterinarian provides quality, compassionate care to pets at all stages of life. This includes specializes geriatric pet care for dogs and cats that are senior in age. When is a pet considered to be a senior? This can vary greatly depending on the type of pet you have, as well as his or her breed and lifestyle. Generally speaking, however, pets are considered to be seniors by the age of 9-10 years.
As your pet ages, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that your pet receives the specialized preventative and wellness care that he or she needs. Fortunately, our veterinary team provides all the services your senior pet needs right here in our office!
The Importance of Senior Pet Preventative Care
Staying on top of your pet’s health is important at all stages of life, but it is especially important to be proactive about your pet’s health when he or she reaches senior age. Specifically, you’ll want to make sure your pet is seeing our vet for preventative care more frequently. While an annual wellness exam may have been enough when your pet was younger, our vet generally recommends twice-annual health and wellness exams for senior pets.
These exams allow us to keep a closer eye on any changes in your pet’s health, as well as screen for common illnesses and underlying medical conditions. And of course, the sooner we’re able to diagnose a health problem in your senior pet, the more proactive we can be about treating or managing it.
Common Signs of Illness in a Senior Pet
In addition to bringing your pet in for more frequent preventative care, we also encourage all owners of senior pets to be aware of some of the more common signs of illness that may arise in older dogs and cats. Specifically, you should be on the lookout for:
If your pet displays any of these symptoms, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our veterinary team at your earliest convenience, as these could be signs of serious underlying medical problems.
