Puppy and Kitten Care from Our San Jose Veterinarian
At Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital, our San Jose veterinarian provides health and wellness services for all stages of your pet's life. If you've just recently brought home a new puppy or kitten (or if you plan on doing so in the near future), our veterinary team can provide the services needed to ensure that your new pet gets off to a healthy start in life.
What to Expect From Your Pet's First Exam with Us
As soon as possible after bringing home your new pet, we recommend that you schedule his or her first wellness exam with us. This examination is important because it not only allows us to establish a relationship with you and your puppy or kitten but enables us to determine an overall baseline for your pet's health. In preparation for this exam, we simply ask that you bring in any relevant paperwork that you have regarding your pet's vaccinations and other veterinary care—which may have been provided to you with your adoption paperwork.
What can you expect from your pet's first wellness exam? We'll perform a thorough evaluation and assessment of key aspects of your pet's health. This includes not only checking your pet's weight and temperature, but assessing vital signs, checking the teeth, and looking at the eyes/ears for signs of infection or other problems.
Your pet's first exam is also a great opportunity to get answers to any questions you may have about your pet's nutrition, behavior, and lifestyle! Our veterinary team is always happy to answer questions and provide recommendations.
Keeping Your Pet Up-to-Date on Vaccinations
Another important part of your pet's first exam will be administering any vaccinations that your pet may require. These are vital for protecting your pet from serious illnesses and diseases, such as rabies. Not to mention, groomers, boarding facilities, and dog parks will all require proof of up-to-date vaccinations.
Specific vaccine schedules can vary depending on the type of pet you have and how long it's been since he or she was vaccinated. Generally, however, puppies will need the following vaccines in their first several months of life:
- canine distemper
- canine influenza
For kittens, we usually recommend some or all of the following vaccinations:
- feline leukemia
- feline distemper
- feline calcivirus
