Pet Wellness Exam From Our San Jose Veterinarian
Many people think about taking their pets to a San Jose veterinarian when they are sick or due for boosters on their vaccinations. While these are both very important times for your pet to see the veterinarian in San Jose, it is equally important that they are seen for their pet wellness exam, even if they seem to be fine.
What Happens During a Pet Wellness Exam?
Just like people need to get regular check-ups, the same goes for your pet. At Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital in San Jose, we take the time to thoroughly check each pet patient during their wellness exam. In addition to weighing your pet, we will also check your pet's breathing and heart rate to make sure there are no issues that need to be addressed. We regularly check thyroid and lymph node glands to rule out any issues. We do a quick dental check, looking for signs of decay, or unusual build up of plaque or tartar which would require a full dental visit and cleaning. We also check ears and eyes looking for signs of infection, ear mites, or possible trouble with vision or hearing, Their abdomen is checked to assure that there is no pain or swelling, and the tail area is checked for any abnormal growths or anything else that may raise concerns.
During a pet wellness exam, your pet's fur, skin, and nails will also be evaluated, and your San Jose veterinarian can also discuss any special dietary needs your pet may have and make recommendations that can benefit your pet's overall health.
How Often Do Pets Need a Pet Wellness Exam?
Most younger, healthy cats and dogs are fine with an annual wellness exam -- similar to what you would offer to a healthy child. Once pets get a little older, or if they have a specific health issue, it is wise to bring them in to see their San Jose veterinarian more often, usually twice a year. Many of the same things are checked on an older pet as are checked on a younger pet but may take more time checking blood and stool samples as older pets are more vulnerable to infections and disease.
