Pet Anesthesia From Your San Jose Veterinarian At Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital

At Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital, our San Jose veterinarian offers anesthesia for pets undergoing any number of treatments or procedures in our office. Having your pet placed under anesthesia ensures that your pet is as comfortable as possible during treatment. Still, putting a pet under anesthesia is not something that should be taken lightly, and we understand that pet owners often have some important questions and concerns about having this done.

Why is Anesthesia Sometimes Required?

There are many reasons as to why we may need to put a pet under anesthesia prior to an in-office treatment. For any type of surgical procedure, for example, we will want to put pets under anesthesia to make sure they don't feel any pain during the surgery and that they are as relaxed as possible. For some dental procedures, such as deep dental cleanings, we may also strongly recommend anesthesia as a means of keeping a pet stress-free. This, in turn, allows our veterinary team to better perform the treatment without having to worry about a stressed-out pet.

What You Need to Know About Pet Anesthesia

If your pet needs anesthesia for any reason, you can rest assured that he or she is in good hands with our veterinarian. Prior to any procedure that will require anesthesia, our veterinary team will perform any necessary blood work and labs to make sure your pet can be safely put under anesthesia and to determine exactly how much of the anesthetic will be required based on your pet's breed, weight, and other specifics.

When your pet is put under anesthesia, an injection is used to administer the proper dosage. Before, during, and after any procedure that requires anesthesia, your pet's vital signs will be carefully monitored by our veterinary technicians and assistants. This will include the use of a heart rate monitor, thermometer (to keep track of your pet's core body temperature), blood pressure monitor, and blood oxygen monitor (where applicable).

Once your pet's procedure is complete, it can take some time for the anesthesia to wear off. Our office will call you to pick up your pet once it is determined appropriate for him or her to return home with aftercare instructions. Keep in mind that it is not uncommon for pets coming out of anesthesia to sometimes be a little lethargic for a day or so.
