Microchipping Pets at Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital, Your San Jose Veterinarian

         microchipped dog

You consider your pet to be another member of your family and you want to do your best to make sure the animal stays healthy, safe and secure. To that end, many pet owners will order an ID tag that lists their contact information for the pet to wear on a collar around its neck. But your San Jose veterinarian wants you to consider what you would do if your pet’s collar gets stuck on a fence and it breaks and the ID tag falls off. When your pet is lost, no one will be able to easily identify it and help you reunite.

What is Microchipping?

Microchipping is a safe and easy procedure that should not cause your animal discomfort. The microchip is a small electronic device that stores digital information (your contact details) and it fits inside a strong glass capsule about the size as a grain of rice.

When you bring your pet to Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital, you’ll provide your name, address, and phone numbers to be stored in the database, and this information will be connected to the unique ID number associated with the chip.

Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

In the days before microchipping to protect pets, owners would do things such as put up posters all around their neighborhood with a photo of the animal, its name and how to reach the owner. Obviously, this limits the number of people who might have seen your dog or cat to those who happen to notice the poster in a limited geographic location.

As people began turning to social media such as Facebook and Twitter, they could share the news about their missing pet much more widely. While this is a great way to help locate an animal, it does not address the issue of people who are not following you on social media.

But with microchipping, a major benefit is that you can be assured that identification of your pet will remain linked to the animal because of the small microchip that has been permanently embedded just below the skin. Another benefit is that microchipping allows for up-to-date information. If you rely on a pet tag hanging off of the animal’s collar, you’ll have to remember to replace the tag –when you move or change your phone. But with the pet database, all you have to do is update your contact details electronically.

Once someone finds your pet, it’s a simple matter of scanning the animal at a vet or shelter to retrieve information from the database so they can contact you!

When You Should Get Your Pet Microchipped

You might be surprised at how old your pet needs to be before getting microchipped. In general, kittens and puppies can be microchipped after they are one month old. The determining factor is the animal’s weight. Your pet should weigh more than 1 pound before getting a chip.
