ASPCA's Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October

More than three million dogs enter shelters in places across the United States each year. These animals are often abandoned, abused and neglected. All of these dogs deserve loving and permanent family homes, and the Adopt a Shelter Dog Month hopes to inform the public of the growing need for pet adoption. If you live in San Jose and need more information about the Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, contact your veterinarian at the Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital for more information.

What is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month?

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month strives to make the public aware of the number of dogs currently in shelters all across the United States. Established in 1981, this event also helps inform the public of the growing need for additional shelters and pushes for spaying and neutering to help curb the rise of unwanted pets.

Who Hosts the Event?

Adopt a shelter dog month is sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This national leader is committed to the rescue, adoption, and welfare of animals. They also work to save animals from dogfighting, puppy mills, hoarding, and other cruel situations. Each year, the ASPCA saves thousands of animals by helping to find them loving homes.

Why is it Important?

Adopting dogs from local shelters saves lives. Each year more than 2.7 million cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States because there are simply too many pets to go around. Adopt a Shelter Dog Month is important because it helps raise awareness of the overpopulation of animals.

For more information on how you can save a life, contact your veterinarian in San Jose at the Bloom Plaza Animal Hospital at (408) 972-2000. We can show you what you can do to get involved in the cause. If you’ve adopted a pet from the local shelter, we can also provide routine checkups to keep your new family member happy and healthy.
